Sparring 101: Keep it Simple!

by Alex on May 4, 2009 · 0 comments

One of the biggest things in a sparring match is quickness. If there is one thing you will always notice in a sparring match is that there is never seen a jump spin roundhouse kick or flying side-kick as well. The most efficient moves you will see that are the most essential to obtain quick points are the jab and front leg front kick, front leg side-kick and front leg roundhouse kick. Of course sometimes you will be able to get that spin back kick or a perfect back leg roundhouse kick to the chest, but more likely you will catch your opponent with your forward hands and feet. The most practical moves are the ones that take up less time and energy.

In doing so you will notice that timing and speed are the main attributes of a sparring match. So the quicker you are able to get off a jab or kick to the other opponent, the better. One thing to remember is that your hands are 3 times faster then your feet, but your feet are three time stronger than your hands. So you will either give up strength for quickness and vice-versa. The other thing that one may notice is that your kicks and feet are good ways to keep an attacker at bay. This works especially well if you are taller then your opponent and are able to keep him away from you and pick him off. The only thing about being taller is that you are more of a mass to attack. There is always a counter to an attribute or action.

So what we have learned here through this quick little tidbit is that using your forward hands and feet are the most efficient tools for a sparring match. Use your skills and keep it simple in the match. The movie sparring matches and fights are mostly un-realistic and purpose a not so-good explanation of how to spar. When you spar more and more, you will see that a simple jab and front leg front kick will suffice for easy points. Good-Luck and keep your hands up! It always sucks to get knocked on your butt from a roundhouse kick to the face. I recommend getting a good set of sparring gear so that you can protect yourself from permanent injury, here are Cheap Prices on Sparring Gear
